Although not very attractive, Changuinola is the gateway to many spectacular wildlife areas in the Province of Bocas del Toro as well as a departure point for neighboring Costa rica. From Changuinola, Buses depart for Rio Teribe, the entrance to the International Park La Amistad (Friendship) jointly managed with Costa Rica.
Five km from Changuinola is the San-San Pond Sak Wetlands, and further up a beach where loggerhead, leatherback, green and hawksbill turtles lay their eggs (April to August).
Changuinola is the headquarter of "the company", referring to the Chiriqui Land Company, the largest employer of the region.
Changuinola has most of the regional government office (except the tourism bureau which is located in Bocas Town, Isla Colon) and two banks
