TOWN OF BOCAS DEL TORO (Isla Colon)

The town of Bocas Del Toro, 175 mi/280 km west of Panama City, is the center of activity in the islands. There are daily small-plane flights to the town from Panama City with connections to and from most airports in Panama and San Jose, Costa Rica, or it can be reached by bus and ferry. Most of the people in the area are Afro-Caribbeans, the rest of the population is made up of Guaymi Indian, Europeans (recently arrived and also descendants from the early “bananeros”) and a handful of US expat. Several hotels, pensions, and restaurants can be found in town, along with shops selling most of all that you will need during your stay.

The prettiest beaches of Isla Colon begin a bit past the town’s beach El Ismito, starting with Big Creek and Puss head. A few miles out of town you will find miles of beautiful, virtually deserted beach on one side of the road and second growth rain-forest on the other side at the area called Bluff. Another beautiful beach is located at the far west end of the island, at Bocas Del Drago.
